Supporting Friends

Sometimes a friend will not want help… what to do?

. You need to understand that for some people who are going through a tough time, reaching out can be a real challenge. Going through a tough time can be difficult or scary. You may need to just give them some time.

. Let them know you are there for them when they are ready to talk.

. Maybe do some research on what help is available that could be helpful for your friend so when they do have thoughts on reaching help, you can make some helpful suggestions.

So what can you do? Tips

  • A sense of humour helps release stress (Making them laugh)

  • At times you might say the wrong thing? A stressed friend can be more sensitive, be careful but if you do say the wrong thing, say sorry and set it right.

  • If your friend is suicidal, do not keep it a secret, tell a trusted adult to help you get help for your friend. In emergencies get them to a doctor or counsellor asap.

  • You can not control what happens to them, just be there for them. Listen.

  • Your friend's problems might become too much for you to handle, you matter as well.

Look out for changes in your friends. Examples to look out for are:  avoidance in friends and family, change of behaviour/mood, crying and so on.
