What's the difference between positive self-talk and negative self-talk?

If you have ever found yourself struggling with positive self talk take time to think about Perma....

You may ask yourself what exactly is PERMA?

PERMA is a acronym that stands for the five elements of positive mental health developed by Martin Seligman.

He believes that these 5 elements can help people reach a life of fulfillment, happiness and meaning.

P= Positive emotions - feeling good

E= Engagement - being completely absorbed in activities

R= Relationships - being authentically connected to others

M= Meaning - purposeful existence

A= Achievement - a sense of accomplishment and success

Positive self-talk makes you feel good about yourself and the things that are going on in your life. It’s like having an optimistic voice in your head that always looks on the bright side.

Examples: ‘I am doing the best I can’, ‘I can totally make it through this exam’, ‘I don’t feel great right now, but things could be worse’

Negative self-talk makes you feel pretty crappy about yourself and the things that are going on. It can put a downer on anything, even something good.

Examples: ‘I should be doing better’, ‘Everyone thinks I’m an idiot’, ‘Everything’s crap’, ‘Nothing’s ever going to get better.’

Self-Talk Model

How does PERMA relate to positive self-talk?

As PERMA is the model of the five elements of mental health, it is able to help people with their self-talk in different ways. Using the different parts of PERMA you are able to engage and find yourself and find the good in everything.
